Overview

What it is? A City of Johannesburg/JRA project to rehabilitate and widen the road crossing on Canterbury Crescent over the local stream in Gallo Manor (Region E). The aim is to fix erosion-related damage and improve flood capacity so the crossing remains safe for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists. Why it’s needed? Inspections found structural distress: cracked wingwalls, pavement rutting above the culvert, and a collapsed/near-collapsed outlet due to scour and high-velocity flows—leaving the bridge vulnerable if left as-is. What will be built? * Rehabilitate the existing single 1.8 m × 1.8 m culvert and widen it to a three-cell (3 × 1.8 m × 1.8 m) structure to increase hydraulic capacity. * Add a drop outlet with energy dissipator blocks to reduce future scour. * Stabilise banks with gabion and reno mattresses to protect the roadway during overtopping. Environmental process The works triggered a Basic Assessment under NEMA (2017 EIA Regulations), notably LN1/19 (infill/excavation in a watercourse) and LN3/12 (vegetation clearance in ESAs). The DBAR finds overall environmental risks low if mitigation in the EMPr is followed. Traffic & construction management JRA initially approved the temporary accommodation of traffic from 13 July 2023 to 31 January 2024, with conditions to maintain safe pedestrian access, emergency access, and signage per the SA Road Traffic Signs Manual. The project TMP details closures, speed control and detours, including specific access arrangements for nearby properties The Programme of Works targeted practical completion around 29 Jan 2024, with staged tasks for stormwater culvert installation, road reconstruction, kerbing and surfacing. (Timeline shown for planning; it does not confirm completion.) Where exactly The site is on Canterbury Crescent, Gallo Manor Ext 1/2; municipal landholdings in the area include **Erf 578 Satara Avenue**, owned by the City of Johannesburg. On-site setup A secured temporary site camp with offices, storage, lay-down, parking, guard house and pedestrian walkway is planned adjacent to the works.
